Don't You Wish You Could Say This To Your Boss?

It's Not What You Think

Hi friend,

Ever wish you could just call in to work and say,
“I’m not coming in today. I feel great, and I don’t want to waste it being at work.”

Spring break is coming, and it got me thinking about time off.

Some people have PTO and can take a day off without anyone panicking. If sick time is the only paid time off you have left, and you need a day, use it.
Some of us? Not even close. We just have to… keep going.

Wherever you fall on that spectrum, here’s what matters:

Try to take an “I feel great day” whenever or however you can.

That's the whole idea behind an "I feel great" day. Taking a break before you need one. When breaks only happen when you’re falling apart, rest stops being recovery.
It becomes a repair.

Repair is expensive.

Here’s the positive psychology twist:

Sometimes the anticipation of a break helps almost as much as the break itself.

The moment something restorative is on your calendar, your nervous system relaxes. It sees space ahead.

And yes, coming back can be a bummer.

We’ll talk about that next week.

Here’s what to focus on this week.

Plan One Real Break

Open your calendar. Pick one day, if you can, before April 30th.

  • Have PTO? Tack it onto a Friday or Monday. Stretch what’s already there.

  • No PTO? Protect what you can. A half day. An evening. A Saturday morning that stays yours.

Name it:

Naming it makes it harder to cancel.

💡 Why This Helps

Your brain is not built to "go forever."

It's built for cycles.

Focus. Effort. Recovery. Repeat.

Planning a break gives your brain permission to pause, and that matters more than most people realize.

Even a small break reminds you that it's okay to stop. That sense of agency, or the feeling of being in control of your own time, is one of the strongest predictors of well-being in positive psychology. It lowers stress and builds resilience.

Take that break.

If you had an “I feel great” day, how would you spend it?

We read and reply to every note.

One day, I hope we can all call in and say, “I feel great. I’m not coming in.”

Until then, take as much time for yourself as you can.

See you next week,

P.S. More than half of Americans leave PTO unused each year. If you’ve earned the time, take it. 💖
